What South Ari is for, and what it isn't.
South Ari is the lower half of Ari Atoll, and it holds the South Ari Marine Protected Area, one of the most reliable year-round whale shark encounter sites on the planet. If seeing a whale shark is on your list, this is the atoll to base on.
The resort count is high by Maldivian standards, with options ranging from mid-range all-inclusive to ultra-luxury. The atoll has its own domestic airport at Maamigili, which opens up private jet access.
The trade-off is density. South Ari has more resorts, more boats, and more traffic than any atoll outside North Male. Book with a specific property in mind rather than 'I want to stay somewhere on Ari.' The difference between one side of the atoll and the other is meaningful.
